What if your kid was the hero of their own story — not a character like them, but an actual Kind Kid cartoon of them? Their hair, their skin, their wheelchair, their AAC device, their stuffed animal, their name. The starring character in every Kind Kid Book is your kid, exactly as they are, a Kind Kid Hero! Each book is built around a real challenge your kid faces — like going to the dentist, brushing their teeth, or crossing the street. And at the center of every story is a real self-advocacy skill — the very skill that makes your kid the hero.
Seeing Is Believing — The Power of Seeing Yourself as the Hero
For a neurodivergent kid, seeing themselves as capable and brave isn’t just inspiring — it’s a game changer. When a child opens a book and the hero looks just like them, uses the same tools they use, and faces the same kinds of challenges they face, something shifts. They don’t just read the story. They imagine themselves living it. And when they imagine it, they start to believe they can live it in real life too.
The Kind Kid’s Rehearsal — Building a Memory of Success
When your kid reads their Kind Kid Book, they aren’t just reading a story. They are practicing for real life. By seeing a character that looks, moves, and communicates just like them navigate a real challenge and use a self-advocacy skill to succeed, they build what we call a memory of success. The situation becomes a little more familiar. And when they finally walk into that moment in real life, they have the memory of their Kind Kid Book to guide them through. They’ve already seen themselves do it. The seed of confidence has been planted. And it’s theirs to grow.
5 Steps to Make a Kind Kid Book
Step 1 — Create Kind Kid Hero
Every Kind Kid Book starts with your kid. In the character creator, you build a Kind Kid Hero that looks just like them — their facial features, their skin tone, their hair, their body, their outfit. Then you add the tools they use: their mobility aids, their sensory tools, their AAC device and more. Save your Kind Kid Hero once, and they’ll star in every Kind Kid Book you make.
Step 2 — Choose a Real Life Scenario
Every Kind Kid Book is built around a real scenario from your kid’s life — the actual situations neurodivergent kids navigate every day. From brushing teeth to visiting the dentist or crossing the street, your kid steps into a real challenge as the hero of their own story. We are constantly adding new scenarios, and your ideas are helping shape what we build next.
Step 3 — Identify the Challenge
No two neurodivergent kids experience the same scenario in the same way. Once you choose your scenario, you identify the specific challenge your kid will overcome as the hero of the story. For one kid the hardest part of going to the dentist might be the loud tools. For another it’s the bright lights. And for another it’s simply not knowing what comes next. You know your kid best — you name the challenge, and together we build the story around it.
Step 4 — Choose a Self-Advocacy Skill to Build
Every Kind Kid Book is built around a real self-advocacy skill — the skill that makes your kid the hero. You choose from our eight self-advocacy categories. Whether it’s reaching for their noise-canceling headphones, asking for a minute before going in, or knowing it’s okay to say “I’m not ready yet” — the skill your kid practices in the story is a skill they can use in real life.
